Whether you’re just putting together your first event or you’ve been planning or helping to plan social or corporate events for a while, it’s easy to fall into the traditional, tried-and-true methods.
After all, if it’s not broke, why fix it? However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t put your own personal touch on certain aspects of any event, and your invitation design is one of those areas.
As longtime event planners in NJ / NY, trust us, some level of originality and customization is necessary nowadays to grab attention and create anticipation for your event, so let’s take a look at a few of the ways you can get creative with your invitations.
Mix up the size, shape, and texture.
No matter the nature of the event, whether it’s an employee appreciation event or a graduation party, the invitations need to include all the necessary details regarding time and place. However, there are a lot of ways to display that information.
You can’t be afraid to get creative with size, shape, and texture, which could mean making slight adjustments like going with a circular design or taking it a little further and choosing more unique shapes that still tie in with your theme or mission.
You can also mix it up by designing something like a brochure style invitation with multiple connected pages that the recipient can flip through.
As far as texture, you can engrave all the necessary details onto the paper’s surface or use other materials like towels, napkins, handkerchiefs, or anything else that ties in with your event.
You can also have illustrations done on paper or one of these other materials, or you can go the vintage route and use old post cards with images on them connected to your event’s theme or mission, or simply go retro in terms of the general design.
Tell your story or sell your mission.
Invitations to wedding events, for example, can tell the couple’s love story or cleverly tie in with their wedding theme while also passing on all the necessary information.
If it’s a corporate conference, incentive meeting, etc., the invitations can showcase the brand personality or reflect the industry, mission, or message and, if appropriate, they can include pictures from previous successful events as well to help enhance the brand identity and the event’s credibility.
But we’ve been in event planning in NY and NJ long enough to know that to truly get your story or mission across to potential attendees, you need to tailor the invitations to their specific preferences or business sector.
Everything from the event invitation design to the wording you use on them should be customized, as much as possible, for the specific recipient it’s intended for.
Your event title choice, as always, is critical.
Lastly, while the invitations will likely be the first impression your guests will get of your event, the event title will be the first impression they get of the invitation, so make it count.

Just remember, as long as your invitations serve their purpose, support or enhance your story, personality, mission, or message, and are tailor-made for the recipient, you can get as creative as you want with them.
The bottom line is, whether you’re planning a conference or a dinner party, if you can manage to get all the necessary details across while also making the invitations unforgettably original, your guests will be counting the days leading up to your event.
