There’s nothing like a good event ambassador. Having attendees spread the word about your social or corporate events to their own personal social circles can be priceless. However, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to get them to do it.
They need to be so blown away by the event and the hype surrounding it, so amazed by how tailored it is to their preferences, and so surprised by the content presented to them that they simply cannot stop themselves from telling everyone they know about it.
So, how do get your attendees to feel compelled to become ambassadors for your event? Well, as NY / NJ event planners who’ve been in the business for over 18 years, we have a few ideas…
1. See what attendees want first.
Poll past attendees beforehand to try to get an idea of what they want to see and experience at future events. Just remember to direct their thought process a certain way so you don’t get flooded with unusable ideas.
For example, let them know that you’re thinking of preparing a couple games to get people to mingle at your event and ask for some suggestions. Then, follow through with the ones that show the most promise.
You’d be surprised how much more enthusiastic attendees will get when they find out their ideas are being listened to or used. They won’t be able to wait to tell people that kind of news, and in doing so, they’ll be spreading the word about your corporate or social event.
2. Reward attendees for coming and spreading the word.
You need to think of all attendees of previous events as potential ambassadors. They’ve shown a clear interest in what your event provides and take it from us as veteran NJ and NY event planners, they’ll be far more likely to check out content about future events, especially if there’s a reward involved.
So, provide them with a discount code. Just remember, if you take this approach you need to keep track of how many attendees actually utilize the code to see how effective the practice is and how effective you can expect it to be moving forward.
You can also set up a referral program in which previous attendees get rewarded for offering discounts or other incentives to their friends or colleagues, and don’t just acknowledge and reward past event attendees. Reward any who interact with you, share your content, or retweet your posts beforehand and make sure all those actions are easy to perform.
3. Throw a pre-event event and add some mystery.
You can also start molding attendees into event ambassadors by planning a pre-event event before the big day. That way, attendees will start building relationships with one another, conversations will spark, people will snap photos and share them, and buzz will start forming around your upcoming event.
From there, never underestimate the elements of mystery and surprise. Whether it’s a famous speaker, a surprise giveaway or shout-out, etc., people love being in the know and being able to pass on their exclusive knowledge to their own circles.
The bottom line is, you need to do all you can to identify, acknowledge, reward, and/or gather potential event ambassadors together before your event because, in the end, if they fulfill their potential, there’s really nothing like them.
